Is Your Email Address Hurting Your Odds?

September 28, 2024 By admin

Every part of your resume is important; from your choice of paper to your font choice, it all makes a difference. One item you should not overlook is the importance of your email address. Consider the impression your email address might make if it is skulls81@… or rodeocowboy@… — not a great first impression, and it might just be your last.

Avoid .edu Addresses

A .edu address makes you look like a student and possibly inexperienced. Beyond labeling you as a student, a .edu address is often eventually retired after graduation or changed to an alumni.edu address.

Avoid Your Current Work Email

It’s tacky to use your current work email as your email address on your resume, whether it’s a professional email address or your current church; it’s just not considered good practice to use your current address.

Avoid Outdated Email Providers

The email provider is signified by the portion of your email address after the “@”. Like it or not, your email provider may communicate something about you (which may or not be true). @aol.com, @compuserve.com, and @hotmail.com communicate are quite old (in internet years), whereas @gmail.com and @yahoo.com are considered more relevant and contemporary.

Use Professional Email Name Conventions

Finally, while we’ve discussed several things to avoid, in closing, here’s our simple recommendation for an email address for your resume; use a modern email address provider and use your name or a variation of your name for your resume.
